Roller cages
Safety is paramount in motorsport, which is why it is important to have a good (FIA approved) roll cage in the car. However, you will soon want to get everything out of the car and yourself with the result that you will go on or over the border. Then a roll cage is not a bad idea.
What is a roll cage?
A roll cage is no more than a series of stuck thick tubes on the inside of the car that is usually retrofitted.
A roll cage starts around the dashboard (A-pillar), continues until just under the roof and ends where the rear seat is located, near the rear wheels.
From left to right and in the middle (B-pillar) there are also tubes.
Welding or screw roll cage?
If you want a complete roll cage, you have to choose between two types: a welded roll cage or a screw cage.
A weld cage is completely welded to the chassis from pipes welded together.
Custom made, based on your wishes.
You can make it as simple or comprehensive as you want and allow your budget.
For example, welding on to the spring struts at the front gives more stiffness.
If you participate in competitions, you are stuck with the organization's regulations, such as the FIA.
Simply put, a welding cage is ultimately stiffer than a cage consisting of screw connections.
You usually buy a screw cage ready-made.
This must then be bolted to the chassis, which is also the advantage and disadvantage of a welding cage.
The attachment by bolts gives more play and movement than with a well-welded roll cage.
More tubes together is not always better.
It is just as if the tubes close together one by one, and not just next to them, makes much difference to the strength of the roll cage.
In terms of thickness, it is usually used between the 40-45mm and sometimes the 60mm.
Common materials for a roll cage are chrome steel.
The welding work must be completely 'welded' and not only fixed with spot welding.
In terms of weight of a cage you should quickly think of 35-50 kilos and more if you have a very large cage.
