The most used racing tires in professional motorsport are unlined tires. This type is called slicks. They are completely smooth from the outside and therefore very functional on a dry road surface. A slick can and can only be used in dry weather.
There is no water drainage option and that makes the risk of skidding very high on a wet track. When there is a chance of rain, we often switch to the so-called semi slicks or intermediates, they keep the middle between slicks and rain tires because they often have a profile cut.
